How does getting married affect your automobile insurance?

By: Bill Morgan

Getting married is one of the most important and life-changing events that most people go through. And of course, along with all of the details like menu choices, floral arrangements, and honeymoon plans, there are a lot of important details to consider. For many couples, marriage means some drastic life changes, including living situations, banking habits, and tax details. While of all of this can grow stressful and maybe even tedious, there is some good news to consider. In many circumstances, shopping for automobile insurance as a married couple rather than as two single people can be a much less expensive enterprise. After getting married, it is probably a good idea to shop around with several automobile insurance providers and compare rates. Part of the savings you will receive on your automobile insurance as a married couple is a result of insuring more than one car with the same provider. Most automobile insurance carriers offer a discount to customers who have more than one car insured with their company. In addition, if you and your spouse are either purchasing a home or renting one, you might be able to receive a discount by obtaining homeowner or renter's insurance through the same carrier as well. Of course, if your spouse has a less than perfect driving record, it might cause a slightly adverse effect on your premiums, but there will probably be a proportionate drop in your spouse's premium, so the total monthly premium will be lower than what you were paying separately before you were married. It is important to have you spouse listed as a driver on your car, even if it's only as a secondary driver. If your spouse were driving your car and got into an accident in your vehicle, the car insurance company might raise some concerns that your spouse was living with you and not added to your policy. And keep in mind, if you get a divorce, you will lose all of these benefits, so there's yet another reason to make it work!
